В своем первом значении means соответствует русскому средства, также имеющему только форму множественного числа. К подобным существительным относятся headquarters, crossroads:There is a dangerous crossroads at the bottom of the hill — У подножья холма есть опасный перекресток.

(3). Выражения by all means и by all possible means или by all the means in our power имеют разные значения. By all means означает конечно и часто употребляется для выражения безусловного разрешения в ответ на просьбу:Can I borrow your umbrella? — By all means — Можно мне взять ваш зонтик? — Конечно/безусловно/пожалуйста;
By all means get yourself a new pair of gloves, but don't spend too much money — Конечно, купи себе новые перчатки, но не трать слишком много денег на это.
Выражение by all possible means соответствует фразе всеми возможными путями, средствами:We must help him by all possible means — Мы всеми средствами должны ему помочь.
Словосочетание by no means или by any means обозначает категорическое отрицание и в этом значении эквивалентно английскому definitely not:Is it all you've got to say? By no means! — Это все, что вы можете сказать? Конечно же, нет.
